| What Would You Choose : Peace or A Computer ? |
|
| Thursday, October 18, 2007 |
This question might sound foolish but when it was asked to most adults in America the reply was, well not so surprising, they would prefer a computer rather than peace and happiness!
A survey by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) revealed that when adults were asked for a top-five gift wish list this holiday most put computers first followed by peace and happiness, a big screen television, clothes and money.
In the last years survey, most adults listed clothing as their top priority followed by peace and happiness, money and then computers where as the teen wish list remained unchanged from last year - clothes, an MP3 player, video games, a computer and a cell phone.
A spokeswoman for the CEA, which promotes growth in the $148 billion U.S. consumer electronics industry, said the research was based on a telephone survey of 1,003 adults and 501 teens aged 12 to 17 and was conducted in the last week of September.
This might surprise some people but well, the respondents might find peace and happiness in sitting in front of a computer, as I do! So, what would you choose ?Labels: General, Internet World |

| Ask 30,000 Web Folks A Few Questions, Get Some Interesting Answers. |
|
| Wednesday, October 17, 2007 |
A List Apart and An Event Apart, had conducted a survey in April of web masters to get to know them better. Almost 30,000 of them answered around 37 questions asked and the results were quite interesting. It is a lot of data and to make sense out of it they arranged the raw data into an understandable, meaningful findings.
The report shares everything they learned and they're offering it for free. For the curious, they also provide an “anonymized” version of the raw data. It contains every answer to every question by every respondent, excluding only personal information—no names, just the facts.
I wonder why such surveys weren't conducted before and on such a big scale. Such research would definitely make people understand web designers or developers in a more specific way, without having to do much effort. They can understand the facts of a certain profession on the go.
So if you are curious to know some interesting facts about web designers then you must see the results of this survey. You can download the results from Here.

| Reduce The Firefox Memory Usage. |
|
| Wednesday, October 10, 2007 |
So you've searched numerous times for firefox tweaks and tricks, gone through thousands of websites and blogs, did whatever you can and tried everything but still couldn't reduce the memory usage in firefox ? Well, you need not worry, there's still hope. There are still some really working firefox tricks that will definitely decrease the memory firefox normally uses. Check the list below.
Check the extensions and themes : This is the most common problem for the high memory usage by firefox. You install several extensions, themes and don't bother to use them or update them. The best solution would be just uninstall the ones you don't use often. Also check the list of problematic extensions and make sure you don't have any of those.
Plugins : Plugins could also be the cause of the problem. Check these links from MozillaZine that you can refer to: Clear the Download History : When you download something in firefox by default the downloaded item remains there, which can cause quite a large memory usage. Once you are done downloading something you should instantly Clean it Up. You can also set firefox to clean up the download history automatically. Go to Tools > Options > Privacy > Uncheck Remember what I’ve downloaded
Start firefox in Safe-Mode : Starting firefox in safe mode will reduce a very big amount of ram. All you need to do is disable all add-ons and everything else in the list. You can easily observe the memory usage decreased by quite a few mega bytes. To start firefox in safe mode go to Start > Run and type "firefox -safe-mode"
About:config Tricks : By default firefox is set to take up a lot of memory for caching. There are few tricks that can reduce this amount.
- Open Firefox and type in about:config in the address bar.
- Type browser.cache.memory.enable in the Filter Bar and make sure it is enabled. If not, just double click it to set it to enable.
- Right-click an area of empty space in the browser and choose New > Integer. Type in browser.cache.memory.capacity and click OK. The integer value you enter depends on the amount of RAM you have. If you have: 256 MB of RAM, enter “4096”, 512 MB of RAM, enter “8192”, 1 GB of RAM, enter “16384” and so forth. Just double the number as your RAM doubles.
- Right-click anywhere on the window and click New > Boolean and enter: config.trim_on_minimize
- Set it's value to true. By setting this to true, Firefox will begin to use less memory when minimized. Restart Firefox for these changes to apply.
Get Firefox Portable :I recently downloaded the Portable Firefox, and trust me it really helped me to reduce the memory usage. I'm not really sure how, but it surely did a great job for me. You can give it a try, download Firefox Portable.Listen to this Article Labels: Firefox Tweaks, Tips and Tricks |

| Microsoft Launches Software Licensing and Protection Services. |
|
| Wednesday, October 3, 2007 |
Piracy and Copying has been the biggest concern for software companies for a long time. A software company that generates $10 million could experience a loss of more than $4 million due to the growth of piracy. This fact has made Microsoft develop it's Software Licensing and Protection Services (SLP Services).
The SLP services will basically help the software developers and vendors maximize their profits by controlling the illegal use of their software products. The SLP Services have three core products which are stated below.
- Code Protector. Code protector secures .NET code against hacking and reverse-engineering. It does this primarily through code transformation, which Microsoft says "takes selected DLL's and functions within the DLL and virtually compiles (transforms) them into a vendor specific format called Secure Virtual Machine Language (SVML). The functions that are transformed to SVML format appear like regular MSIL function (in terms of interfaces), but are much harder to reverse engineer."
- SLP Server 2008. SLP Server's primary role is to allow ISVs to control SKUs in a more granular way. Called "SKU Agility", it can create digital licenses that map to a product's pre-defined features. That allows ISVs to tailor all, or parts, of a program to specific customers.
- SLP Online Service. SLP Online is a hosted version of SLP Server. Having the service hosted minimizes the upfront cost of the service. It can also add convenience, since it enables licensing and product activation through the SLPS Licensing Portal.
Piracy has a scary impact on the software companies worldwide. More than a third of software installed on PCs worldwide in 2006 was obtained illegally, according to a recent study which concluded that the software publishers go through a loss of over $40 billion yearly.
The SLP Services is quite costly but it does have the potential to more than make up the cost of the program, according to Microsoft.
More information on the SLP Services can be found Here.

| CoolHotmail.com - Is it Really Cool ? |
|
| Monday, October 1, 2007 |
CoolHotmail, is a new service released by Microsoft offering web mail accounts on a bunch of cool customized domain names which are powered by Windows Live Hotmail. These are over 250 custom domains aimed at the Indian users, especially the youth.
Here, a user can choose an E-mail id that really reflects his personality. The choices are based upon who you are, where you live, what you like, whom you like etc and in case you don't fit in either of these categories there are plenty of other choices as well. You can even let Microsoft know what E-mail id you would like to have.
Jaspreet Bindra, Country Manager, Online Services Business, Microsoft India, said “Our research shows that the youth today want their own identity and there are not enough email ids available to truly describe one’s personality. An email id is a part of one’s own identity and since people use email as the primary mode of contact, it is important to have an email id which is unique. This led us to roll out a comprehensive list of free personalized email ids that will allow users more choice in an email id with all the added features of their Windows Live Hotmail account, for free.”
This concept will attract users only from India to join Windows Live Hotmail in an indirect way, however Microsoft will make the Coolhotmail service global in coming months. Now, it makes me think that is Microsoft really playing it cool ? Or it is just another move for gaining edge over the competitive services Yahoo and Google.

| Gmail Cookie Vulnerability Exposes User's Privacy. |
|
| Thursday, September 27, 2007 |
According to ZDNet, Petko Petkov of ethical hacking group GNUCitizen has developed a proof-of-concept program to steal contacts and incoming e-mails from Google Gmail users.
Pure hacking security researcher Chris Gatford told ZDNet that currently it is demonstrated as a proof of concept but also has the potential to be used for malicious purposes.
According to Gatford, attackers could compromise a Gmail account, using a cross-site scripting [XSS] vulnerability. If the victim is logged in and clicks on a malicious link. From that moment, the attacker can take over the session cookies for Gmail and subsequently forward all the account's messages to a POP account. If someone picks up on this before Google fixes it or if someone knew of the vulnerability before this guy published it, this could be very damaging to Gmail users, he added.
Google's policy of retaining cookies for two years could turn out to be a big threat for Gmail users because once the attacker has managed to snarf a cookie, the users account can be accessed without the password for two years!
XSS vulnerabilities have always been a thing of concern, in the last year or so, [XSS vulnerabilities] have been used by attackers to grab cookie values and therefore gain access to normally password protected sites, Gatford said.
Update : This vulnerability has been reportedly fixed by Google. On the 30th October, Google said "It was recently alerted to a potential security vulnerability affecting the Gmail service. We have since fixed this vulnerability, and all current and future Gmail users are protected".
